A native of East Austin, Texas, June H. Brewer (1925-2010) was one of the first African-American women to apply and be admitted to the graduate school at University of Texas at Austin in 1950. Having received her bachelor’s degree from Tillotson College (now Huston-Tillotson University) and her master’s degree in English from Howard University, Brewer attained her PhD from UT Austin in 1963.
